I began drawing seriously for the first time since childhood in October 2014 when I took my first course with online art school Sketchbook Skool. I wasn’t very good and it took me a long time to instil a regular drawing habit. I was especially scared of drawing people. Then, in the spring of 2019, I took a Sketchbook Skool course which included a week of people drawing, led by artist Vin Ganapathy.
Vin introduced us to the Sktchy app, where people who want to be drawn upload selfies and artists draw them. I decided to draw a portrait a day from Sktchy for 99 days, in the hope that at the end of that time I wouldn’t be scared of drawing people any more. I drew for all 99 days and I haven’t stopped drawing faces since. By day 99 I was hooked on this new addiction. Yes, I’ve missed a few days here and there but I’ve now drawn 1068 portraits. You can see them all on Sktchy and Instagram.
I highly recommend joining Sketchbook Skool if you want to learn to draw with an amazing supportive community of artists of all abilities from beginner to practising artist. You can find out more here.
I also recommend joining Sktchy if you love to draw people and want to be part of a wonderful community of artists and muses. Unfortunately the app is only available on IOS devices (sorry if you have an android or other phone or tablet!). You can get the app here. If you do join Sktchy say hello – my username is @helenlp
