Polina

This was fun! A very straightforward Copic marker and coloured pencil portrait of Polina from Sktchy in my Midori cotton sketchbook.

Angelina

This is Angelina from Sktchy. I didn’t quite capture her likeness, as usual I lost it around it around the mouth somewhere. But it’s not the end result that matters so much as the process and I had a wonderfully focused couple of hours drawing this.

I try to let go of any attachment to the end result as far as I possibly can when I’m drawing and just let myself get lost in the process. At the end of the day the outcome is just a drawing on a piece of paper. If I’m not happy with it I can turn the page and start again. What is really important to me is the time I spend drawing, the sense of calm and relaxation I get from that, and the learning and practice I get from any time spent drawing. Every hour spent drawing is time spent developing skills, even if that drawing turns out being one I hate.

If you’re beginning to draw this is the hardest lesson to learn – I remember people saying it to me a few years ago and I just couldn’t believe I would ever learn it, but I did in the end. Process over outcome. It’s the process of drawing that matters much more than the outcome, at least while you’re not a professional artist or taking exams. Draw, draw, draw, worry less about outcome and enjoy the process.

Brady

I forgot to post this yesterday amidst all the tennis and football fever in the UK. Both Wimbledon and the Euros are now over (boohoo) so my work frenzy will no longer be complicated by a sport frenzy (at least until the Olympics begin). Which means I might manage some more drawing. Anyway, this is Brady from Sktchy drawn with Copic markers and Prismacolor coloured pencils.

Solawleh

It’s a busy time of year with lots of examining going on and projects finishing up before the school holidays begin so work has been very hectic and, although I’ve been managing to squeeze in a little bit of drawing every day, it’s taking several days to complete a portrait. So here’s one of Solawleh from Sktchy drawn with Copic markers and coloured pencils over a few days and maybe I’ll get to finish another one I started today tomorrow.

Kim

I love drawing faces with shaved heads or very short hair so I can focus on the facial features and skintones without the distraction of hair. So I enjoyed sitting in my comfort zone and drawing Kim’s beautiful face so much today!

Mackenzie

This is Mackenzie from Sktchy and this is what I think of as my trademark style – Copic markers and coloured pencils ina Midori cotton sketchbook.

Dylan

I’ve spent most of the last 2 weeks on a hospital course which is the second stage (after assessment) of a clinical pathway for getting a spinal cord stimulator for neuropathic pain. It’s been a punishing 2 weeks and I’m physically and emotionally drained, so sitting down to draw Dylan from Sktchy this morning was the perfect way to decompress.

This was my first drawing in a new larger Midori Cotton sketchbook. I’ve never used the A4 size before (Iusually work in the smaller A5 size) but it felt good to have so much more space to work with.

Copic Marker Sketchbook

I’ve just realised that I completed my Copic marker sketchbook a few days ago – I didn’t notice that I was on the last page when I was drawing in it. So I’ve filmed a flip through of it and posted it on my YouTube channel.

I’m really happy with the progress I’ve made looking through it since I began it in January 2020. If you’d like to take a look at it you can view it here.

Julieta

This is the lovely Julieta from Sktchy. I used to work only in Copic markers but I think it’s fair to say that I couldn’t imagine working only with markers these days. I always work over them with coloured pencils to add more subtlety and sheen to the skintones and highlights in the hair. They are also great for working over smalll errors in my linework!

Lindsay

I lost the likeness a little in this portrait of Lindsay from Sktchy but it was fun to draw. I was back in my comfort zone of Copic markers and coloured pencils which always feels so much more controllable than any other medium to me, so I was maybe a bit too relaxed and forgot to keep an eye on the likeness!
