Hannah

This is Hannah, who’s photo was posted on Sktchy by photographer Andy. As you may know by now if you’re a regular visitor to this blog, I’m not a huge fan of drawing hair so I’m always happy to draw models with very short hair like Hannah here. And it makes it so much easier to focus on bone structure when there’s no hair getting in the way. Having said all that, I totally lost the likeness in this portrait, though I still like the way it turned out.

Catherine

This is drawn from an inspiration photo on Sktchy of Catherine posing as Frida Kahlo. Since Frida is one of my favourite artists and inspirations it should be no surprise that the photo found its way to the top of my Sktchy queue as soon as I saw it. I used Copic markers and Prismacolor coloured pencils to draw it in my Midori cotton sketchbook.

This is a portrait drawn from a photo posted by D on Sktchy so I’m afraid I don’t know the model’s name. i usually name my portraits after the model so in this case I’ve named it after the person who posted the inspiration image.

I drew it in my Midori cotton sketchbook with Copic markers and Prismacolor coloured pencils but I wasn’t happy with the hair so I uploaded it to my iPad Pro and then worked on the hair a little bit using the Procreate app to soften the edges and make it look a little less like a wig. I’m still not very happy with it but this is a huge improvement on how it looked before!

Back in the land of chronic migraine today so happy simply to have completed this portrait of Ronda from Sktchy. I drew it with Copic markers in my Midori cotton sketchbook.

I can’t resist a good mirror selfie, especially when there’s a little bit of distortion to make it a bit more fun! This is a portrait of Melek drawn from a really fabulous mirror selfie she posted on Sktchy.

James

Some days I’m tired and I want an easy draw. It’s so hot here on the south coast of England right now it’s hard to find the energy to do anything so I’m taking the path of least resistance. That means hanging out in my Copic comfort zone today for this portrait of James, drawn in my Midori cotton sketchbook.

Marta

Struggling with a very strange migraine at the moment and it made it very difficult to draw this portrait of Marta from Sktchy. I was having trouble seeing colours, tones, shapes and details. It was a very odd experience and in retrospect I’m amazed that I even finished the drawing but can see how off all those elements are. Maybe I’ll try again when my head doesn’t hurt. In the meantime this will have to do.

This is Daniela from Sktchy. I love to draw from inspiration photos where the image is framed in a mirror – this photo jumped out at me when I saw it and was just irresistible. I love the way mirrors contain and frame the face and I especially like the landscape aspect of this one, which I so rarely draw.

I was also using a new pen for the linework. I’ve just discovered the Unipin dark grey brush pen and I adore it. It can draw a very fine line but is pressure sensitive and very responsive. Expect to see me using it regularly. And for the colourwork I used Copic markers and Prismacolor coloured pencils.

Johnathan

I try to get a balance in my portraits of young and old, male and female, and as many different skin colours and faces from all over the world as I can find. Obviously Sktchy is my source and it’s an app that’s used globally so there’s an incredible range of faces to choose from, from every corner of the world. But it’s still dominated by young women, and probably predominantly Caucasian. And these are the faces I’m most comfortable drawing. But I’m trying to push myself to be braver and move outside that comfort zone.

I struggle with black skin because I haven’t drawn enough of it; I can’t get the smooth transitions I get when I draw white skin. I have to think much harder about my colour choices and I need a lot more practice with my actual drawing. So I need to hunt out many more BAME faces on Sktchy and get practicing.
