I’m still struggling to find my drawing/painting stride after weeks of work and political stress. I was woken up by a migraine at 3.30am this morning so I’m just happy to have completed this portrait of Alexis today.
I painted Alexis in my Laloran sketchbook with Zecchi Toscana watercolours and finished the portrait with coloured pencils.
Alexander’s face ended up a little wonky but never mind. I’m snowed under with work at the moment and really struggling to find drawing time, which I’m finding frustrating. I hate not having enough time to settle down and focus properly on drawing but everything I’m doing feels very rushed at the moment. I’m so looking forward to the Christmas break, when I’ll have two whole weeks with no work and plenty of time to draw!

I love playing with light and shadows in my portraiture. I’m always drawn to Sktchy inspiration photos that have interesting light and shadows in them and the photo that inspired this portrait of AmĂ©lie is a good example. Her hair and the bottom part of her face was well lit but the top half of her face was in a great shadow cast by the bucket hat. Capturing that shadow, and the texture of the hat, without making everything too dark and overworking the portrait was a great challenge and I’m really happy with how it turned out.

I had the time to sit at my desk and paint for the first time in a week today. Its hard to express how much I’ve missed it. I didn’t even have the patience to ink over my pencil lines!

Today’s portrait of Lala is also my submission for this week’s Sktchy Wonderland challenge, to draw a portrait inspired by Alice in Wonderland, which also happens to be one of my favourites books (and Tenniel’s original illustrations remain my favourite, although there have been many fine revisionings).

Drawing this portrait of Sophie reminded me how much I love drawing machinery of any kind. I don’t draw enough of it. Reminder to self to draw more portraits involving machines 🙂.

I want to spend more time on my portraits and, in particular, try to draw at least some portraits that include more than just a face. So here is a little more of Kaelin than just her face.

Sktchy is having a Halloween portrait party. I’m a huge fan of The Walking Dead and so when I saw a photo of this zombie amongst Cin’s inspiration photos on Sktchy it was irresistible. And it was huge fun to paint.
I used my Zecchi Toscana watercolours to paint it in my Laloran sketchbook and then finished it off with my Prismacolor coloured pencils.
Sometimes I make a portrait that I’m really happy with. This is one of those times. I love this portrait of Claudio. I feel like I got just the right combination of light and dark in the watercolour and then just the right amount of pencil marks to enhance it and not overwork it. That doesn’t happy often but when it does it’s good.
