Anna

Not feeling that well these past few days, it’s been a crazy work week month…) and I’m really feeling it, and I’m struggling a little to focus on my drawing. I feel that I’m losing the likenesses more than usual but I’m still enjoying the process as much as ever.this is the very beautiful Sktchy muse Anna – though it doesn’t look entirely like her!

I drew it in my Hannehmühle Nostalgie sketchbook with Polychromos coloured pencils.

Craig

I somehow managed to totally lose Craig’s likeness while drawing this portrait. That happens more when I draw with pencils than with any other medium, perhaps because I’m still finding my way and not yet entirely comfortable using them. I think I’m focusing so much on trying to find a technique that works for me that I pay less attention to the actual drawing of the face once I’ve mapped the basic shapes and so I lose the likeness. That’s my excuse anyway!

Marie

This portrait of Sktchy muse Marie was drawn in a Hannehmühle Nostalgie sketchbook with Polychromos coloured pencils.

Klara

I love watching artists draw and watching Robin Hilthouse draw in his Sktchy Portraits in Pen course is such a pleasure. I’m also learning so much. He takes around 8 to 10 hours for a full face portrait; I haven’t got either the patience or the skill yet for an 8 hour drawing but this unfinished portrait of Sktchy muse Klara took around 2-3 hours and by the end I was definitely making lighter better strokes than at the start.  So I definitely made progress over the time it took me to draw it!

I drew this in a Moleskine sketchbook with a variety of Bic and Staedtler ballpoint pens.

Layla

Still finding my way with coloured pencils. I’m only really comfortable hatching and I’m still trying to figure out how to represent form, colour and light and shade with pencils using hatching. It’s a slow process and I’m finding that I’m exaggerating form much more than I do with other mediums – I’m not quite sure why its especially obvious in this drawing, where I’ve obviously elongated Layla’s torso quite a lot. I was aware that I was doing it but it seemed quite a natural thing to do with my pencils.

Mad Lab

I’ve only been drawing with coloured pencils for a couple of months so I’m still figuring out a method that works for me. Hatching feels most comfortable, although I sometimes drift into full on shading as I’m hatching, like I did with the hair here.

This is drawn in a Hannehmühle Nostalgie sketchbook from a Sktchy photo provided by Mad Lab Studio. I used a range of coloured pencils – I have a wide selection which includes lots of Prismacolors, a few Derwent Artists pencils, and a very Polychromos and Bruynzeels.
