Cuervo

I got to spend a couple of hours with my watercolours and coloured pencils drawing and painting Cuervo from the Museum by Sktchy app. I’ve got a migraine today but I find drawing for an hour or two helps me to focus and forget the pain, at least for a little while, so long as I have enough natural light to work by (I can’t cope with artificial light or too bright natural light).

Rime

This is Rime from the Museum by Sktchy app. I drew her portrait with a fineliner, Copic markers and Prismacolor coloured pencils. This is very much my comfort zone. I always feel most at home when drawing with Copics and in the past year or so I’ve added coloured pencils to this working method because I can add some softness and extra detail (both highlights and shadows) to the marker drawing with them.

International Womens Day 2022

Today is International Womens Day and the best way I know to honour it is with my drawings of women. I’ve drawn thousands of women from the Museum by Sktchy app over the years since I started drawing portraits – these are just a few of them. I owe a huge debt of gratitude to them all and especially to Jordan Melnick, the creator of the app, and his team at Sktchy.

Anais

Anais from the Museum by Sktchy app, drawn with Copic markers and coloured pencils.

Lina

I had surgery to implant both a spinal cord stimulator and dorsal root stimulator in my spine a week ago today. It’s been a rough first week of recovery and today is the first day I’ve felt able to art, but I’ve managed a whole portrait.

This is Lina from the Museum by Sktchy app painted in watercolour and finished with coloured pencils,

Alondra

Just when I think I’ve finally got to grips with drawing hair a portrait shows me that I really haven’t. This portrait of Alondra from the Museum by Sktchy app was one of those. How I struggled to capture her beautiful hair and I’m a million miles away from where I want to be. I really can’t find any good online courses on drawing/painting hair either so if anyone reading this knows of any please let me know!

Taylor

I’m not getting much drawing done right now. I’ve had a post-durapuncture headache since I had my trial spinal cord stimulator removed, which is causing nausea, dizziness and various other problems, all of which make drawing difficult. But I finished a portrait today, yay!

Nicki

More practice at drawing children today with this portrait of Nicki’s son, as usual drawn from a photo on the Museum by Sktchy app. I got a much better likeness this time, though I’ve still aged him a little. Such a great expression to draw.

Scout

This is Scout, a very talented child model and probably the most famous and most often drawn child muse on the Museum by Sktchy app. I don’t often draw children but I wanted to get some practice in for a big commission I’ve just landed. But the lack of experience shows – I really haven’t got Scout’s likeness and I’ve also made her look much too serious. So more practice needed.

Karina

Drawing when I can at the moment. Took a couple of days drawing this portrait of Karina from the Museum by Sktchy app in snatched moments between work and everything else. Still searching for my drawing mojo but always happy to have actually completed a portrait.
