First portrait in my new watercolour portrait sketchbook – a large Moleskine watercolour sketchbook.

I love holiday weekends because I get so much more time to just play around with drawing and experiment. Over last Easter weekend I had fun with a Chromograph stippling brush on my iPad Pro and tweaked a line stippling brush I already had so that I could use that with it, and drew this portrait of Korka from the Museum by Sktchy app. Obviously influenced by Van Gogh and Seurat but I was also very much just playing around and having fun and seeing where that took me.

My favourite drawing to do to relax is ballpoint pen drawing. There’s nothing as calming and meditative as hatching in a single direction with my Bics. This portrait of Jacob was the perfect exercise for a chilled Bank Holiday weekend.

This is Kevin from the Museum by Sktchy app. I drew Kevin in yesterday’s Sketchbook Skool Drawing Faces class.
Since I started teaching these classes last May I have become so much faster at drawing! When I first started the classes I would only get about halfway through a portrait in the 45 minutes or so drawing time. I finished this entire drawing yesterday before the class was finished and had time left over to take questions. I’ve learned to draw both faster and less to get more done in the time.

This is Richard from the Museum by Sktchy app. I’m definitely embracing the wonky in this portrait, drawn in this week’s Sketchbook Skool Spark Drawing Faces class.
We were focusing on drawing beards so I wasn’t planning on adding colour to the face but I had enough time to do that quickly at the end of the session. It was an interesting experience working on the face at the end, rather than first – definitely outside my comfort zone! But I’m happy enough with the finished portrait.

We worked on creating simple poster style portraits on our iPads using 4 colour palettes in this week’s Spark class. I drew this portrait of Stacey from Sktchy during the class. After class I played around with the gradient map in Procreate to create the alternative versions below.

This is a portrait of Svet from the Museum by Sktchy app. It’s been a while since I’ve done a portrait like this on my iPad. I did a whole series a few years ago and I’m revisiting the style for a class I’m teaching later this week.
I drew the blue and yellow version in the top left corner and then created the other colour versions by playing with the colour curves in Procreate.

We’ve been working on tone in this week’s Sketchbook Skool Spark class and Richard’s face was such a good model to work from, offering such a good range of values.
