Marta

Struggling with a very strange migraine at the moment and it made it very difficult to draw this portrait of Marta from Sktchy. I was having trouble seeing colours, tones, shapes and details. It was a very odd experience and in retrospect I’m amazed that I even finished the drawing but can see how off all those elements are. Maybe I’ll try again when my head doesn’t hurt. In the meantime this will have to do.

I drew this with Copic markers and Prismacolor coloured pencils in a Midori cotton sketchbook.

Hannah

I got some new stippling brushes for Procreate and played with them while drawing this portrait. I have an electric stippling pen that I used to love drawing with, though I haven’t used it for a while, so it was fun to play with dots again, although i think I’ll need lots more practice with these brushes before I’ll feel confident using them. But I’m happy enough with this first go at drawing Hannah from Sktchy.

I drew Hannah on my iPad Pro using the Procreate app and True Grit Texture Supply’s Stippling Brush Set for Procreate.

Daniela

This is Daniela from Sktchy. I love to draw from inspiration photos where the image is framed in a mirror – this photo jumped out at me when I saw it and was just irresistible. I love the way mirrors contain and frame the face and I especially like the landscape aspect of this one, which I so rarely draw.

I was also using a new pen for the linework. I’ve just discovered the Unipin dark grey brush pen and I adore it. It can draw a very fine line but is pressure sensitive and very responsive. Expect to see me using it regularly. And for the colourwork I used Copic markers and Prismacolor coloured pencils.

Yanina

I painted Yanina from Sktchy in my Moleskine watercolour sketchbook with Zecchi watercolours and finished the portrait with Prismacolor coloured pencils.

Stephanie

Over the last 6 months or so, since I took the Sktchy’s Portraits in Pen course, I have gradually fallen in love with ballpoint pen drawing. After a lot of experimentation I’ve found my own style and I find ballpoint pen drawing so beautifully meditative. It’s what I turn to when I’m feeling most stressed because I know it will calm me down and chill me out.

Today was quite full on so I picked up my Bics and drew the beautiful Stephanie from Sktchy in my Life Noble Note Plain.

Johnathan

I try to get a balance in my portraits of young and old, male and female, and as many different skin colours and faces from all over the world as I can find. Obviously Sktchy is my source and it’s an app that’s used globally so there’s an incredible range of faces to choose from, from every corner of the world. But it’s still dominated by young women, and probably predominantly Caucasian. And these are the faces I’m most comfortable drawing. But I’m trying to push myself to be braver and move outside that comfort zone.

I struggle with black skin because I haven’t drawn enough of it; I can’t get the smooth transitions I get when I draw white skin. I have to think much harder about my colour choices and I need a lot more practice with my actual drawing. So I need to hunt out many more BAME faces on Sktchy and get practicing.

Working in my Moleskine watercolour sketchbook again today with my Zecchi paints for this portrait of Leah from Sktchy.

Anastasia

I drew Anastasia from Sktchy with Bic ballpoint pens in a Life Noble Note Plain notebook. I have to say that drawing with ballpoints is definitely the most therapeutic kind of drawing I’m doing right now – hatching in one direction is just so meditative.

Avonlea

Although I enjoy exploring all kinds of drawing and painting media, I’m always happiest in my Copic comfort zone. This is Avonlea from Sktchy, drawn with Copic markers and Prismacolor coloured pencils in a Midori cotton sketchbook.
